St. Dominic's clinic and Maternity
Ogungbade Village, New Ife Road
P.O Box 927, Agodi-Gate
Ibadan
The Congregation of the Dominican sisters of St Catherine of Siena arrived in Nigeria on February 1988. In 2002 they opened a new community in Ogungbade village situated in the north outskirt of Ibadan city.
Immediately the inhabitants of Ogungbade village came in contact with the sisters. One of their pressing needs at that time was to have health care services. They were insistent on that demand, and this was made official by the village head. And so the mission of the sisters therefore, did not remain only in the spiritual formation of the future sisters but also in the cure for the sick.
In 2002 , when the sisters arrived, there was no organized health care institution for the people. The St Dominic clinic came into existence on the 5th of May 2003 with a permission to utilize their boys’ quarter for this service.
The beginning of the mission was very challenging and the sisters experienced many challenges. The scarcity of personal was evident and this obvious difficulty made the sisters initially to run the new clinic only at weekends.
Today the clinic has grown and its principal activities include: first aid, treatment of general deceases like Malaria, Hypertension typhoid etc. At the same time it offers Maternity of Child welfare services, health education.
The sisters in the clinic are qualified to render good health services to the complex needs of the people and the sisters are also involved in diagnostic investigations and laboratory analysis. In 2006/2007 over five thousand patients were attended to. Due to the daily increasing demand, especially in the area of surgery, the idea to build a standard hospital arose.
A standard hospital capable of rendering a high quality of health care services is already constructed thanks to the generosity of good hearted men and women, both within and outside the country.
But the sisters still have a debt of 400 000 Euros for the construction of the building and they have arrived at the furnishing stage now and they really can not go alone for it is heavy on them. They are doing everything by themselves: the cooking and the washing with two women helping for the cleaning.
One doctor, who accepted to be paid less money, joined the Hospital and he is being helped by the sisters who are nurses.
When we met Sister Elizabeth and Sister Alessia, we were amazed by all the energy they put in that hospital. Those sisters are doing an incredible job to collect money to make the hospital work and also to take care of all their little patients and future mums.
We really want to help them. According to their needs we first want to give them a washing machine so it will help them as they don’t have any help for the laundry. Later if we have more money we would like to help them in buying some furniture for the hospital.
